Official Summary[]

HOME AGAIN

Erdas is a land of balance. A rare link, the spirit animal bond, bridges the human and animal worlds. Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan each have this gift—and the grave responsibility that comes with it.

But the Conquerors are trying to destroy this balance, setting the world on fire and swallowing whole cities in their rush for power—including Meilin’s home. Fed up with waiting and ready to fight, Meilin has set off into enemy territory with her spirit animal, a panda named Jhi. Her friends aren’t far behind... but they’re not the only ones.

The enemy is everywhere.

The book opens up with Meilin lost in the Great Bamboo Maze. Rollan, Conor, and Abeke get a letter from the Greencloaks and soon set off for Zhong to find Dinesh the Elephant. A starved and worn-out Meilin finds an old lady named Xue in the maze who leads her to a camp full of loyalists. Meilin finds her father, General Teng in the camp, but he tells her to go back to the Greencloaks and she soon leaves. Rollan, Conor, Abeke, and Tarik find themselves in trouble in a town called Xin Kao Dai but soon leave into the jungle. They encounter the Tergesh and find out that Rollan is sick with the Sunset Death. Meilin joins them there. Abeke and Conor complete the task the Rhino Riders set for them and give Rollan the cure for his illness. The Rhino Riders lead them to Dinesh, and they battle Conquerors for the Slate Elephant. During this battle, Dinesh joins to make the fight “even”. Shane and Conor encounter each other for the first time while both blocking a blow from a Conqueror towards Abeke. Meilin’s father dies, leaving her devastated and confused.
