“I’ll go alone if I must. While I live, Erdas has a protector.”

–Briggan, Tales of the Great Beasts, Essix, Part Five: Fall of the Four[1]

Briggan is a wolf Great Beast, and Conor’s spirit animal. He is one of the Four Fallen, and the patron beast of the continent of Eura.

Appearance[]

Briggan is a large wolf with long limbs, luxurious coarse gray-white fur, large paws, keen claws, savage teeth and striking, deep cobalt-blue eyes, a trait only he possesses. He has a warm, pink tongue.[2] While sitting, his head is well above Conor’s waist.[3]

Overview[]

Briggan is one of the four animals who gave their lives to preserve Erdas in the First Devourer War. He was the greatest Seer before he fell in battle. While it will take time, Briggan will eventually be able to speak audibly and see things ahead again. He is also fast, agile, and ferocious. He is on the flag of Eura. While headstrong, he and Conor are still quickly becoming great friends and earning respect from each other. He is also the first introduced out of the Four Fallen.

Briggan is a natural leader and has a very honorable personality, though he is not a very good talker. He is very driven by duty. Wild wolves seem to respect his presence and will quickly submit to him, as seen in Fire and Ice. As a spirit animal, Briggan can be playful and enthusiastic a lot of the time with Conor, and acts much like a domestic dog, playing fetch with Conor.

Wild Born[]

During this book he is summoned to be with Conor. Conor and Briggan then go with the Greencloaks to Sunset Tower. When Rollan attempts to escape, Briggan catches him, and Conor persuades him to stay. During training, he helped Conor with a burst of speed. He helps Conor, and both are learning to respect each other and establish a tight bond. At the end of the book, he trusts Conor to allow him to put him in a passive state as they have forged a tighter bond during the battle for Arax’s talisman, the Granite Ram.

Hunted[]

Briggan is featured prominently on the cover, and he plays a major role in this book. Tarik trains the Four to fight with regular, ordinary weapons as a fight can be anywhere at any time. Briggan assists Conor while they fight with other Greencloaks. While Briggan and Conor were travelling to Glengavin, they were ambushed by Conquerors. Later, when Conor and Rollan get to Trunswick, Conor notices Briggan isn’t on the flag anymore. At the end of the book, in the battle for Rumfuss’s Iron Boar talisman, Briggan was attacked by Elda, Devin’s spirit animal. He did not give Conor a dream about Dinesh the Elephant at the end, but it was assumed he probably did later.

Blood Ties[]

Briggan is shown at the beginning to seem embarrassed about Conor giving away the Iron Boar of Rumfuss, leaving when Conor reaches to pet him and hiding.

He was very vicious towards Zhamin when he attacked Uraza and, along with her, did not enjoy the water. He had not given Conor a dream about the next Great Beast, Suka the Polar Bear, as Dinesh had told them about her.

Fire and Ice[]

Briggan drives away a pack of wolves who tried to attack caribou. The herders thank him. Briggan disapproves of Rollan due to the way he has been treating Conor. Rollan pets him then apologizes to Conor. Briggan approves of the apology. Essix later brings them a fox and Briggan communicates with it.

Rise and Fall[]

The team finds out that Cabaro hates humans. Briggan, along with Essix go to Cabaro’s oasis, seeking his talisman, The Golden Lion. Briggan is insulted by Cabaro, as Cabaro claimed that Briggan wasn’t as great as he used to be. Cabaro also mentions that Briggan preferred hunting with him instead of Uraza. He then gets attacked by Cabaro’s lionesses which leaves him wounds.

The Evertree[]

Conor receives prophetic dreams from Tellun even when Briggan is in passive state. The team gets news that they have to go to Stetriol. Briggan doesn’t like being on ships, so Conor keeps him in passive for their voyage. When Tellun asked the Four Fallen to risk their lives again, Briggan is the first to submit. When they are fighting Kovo in the last battle, Briggan bites his wrist while Conor jumps on his back.

Immortal Guardians[]

Briggan greets Meilin at Greenhaven by jumping on her and licking her. Later, he travels to the Petral Mountains with Conor, Meilin, Takoda, and Kovo. When Kovo runs into the entrance to Sadre, Briggan follows him and is then trapped underground with the group.

Broken Ground[]

Briggan comforts and protects Conor as the parasite is going further up his arm. When he notices Conor getting a little aggressive, he begins protecting Meilin, Takoda, and Xanthe. Later on when Kovo is giving everyone names, he calls Conor “Cursed”. Briggan gets immediately defensive.
