Kovo is a silverback gorilla Great Beast who sided with the Conquerors alongside Gerathon the Serpent in the first series. In the second series, he is summoned back into Erdas by Takoda (which is shown in Tales of the Fallen Beasts), a young monk.

He is the secondary antagonist of the entire franchise; serving as the overarching antagonist of the original series; being the main antagonist of the last book, The Evertree, and as the overarching antagonist of the earlier books. He is also the overall main protagonist of the second series as well as the hero of it unlike he was in the original series, where he appeared to be a villain without a doubt.

Overview[]

Kovo is a huge silverback gorilla with scarlet eyes.[1] He is known for being extremely clever and deceptive. In Sadre, he is known to be the wisest of all the Great Beasts. He seems to not get along well with humans, and can be very stubborn, but he eventually develops a close bond with Takoda. He also apparently likes to make jokes, according to Suka. A Niloan folktale tells a story about how Kovo tricked Uraza and Cabaro into a territory dispute, and in return Kovo's tail was cut off by them.

Centuries prior to the series, Kovo witnessed the Wyrm's egg fall from the sky and strike The Evertree, wounding it. As a result, he and the Hellans people created a trap that would eventually trap the Wyrm if it were to escape from its egg underneath the Evertree. This was unknown to the rest of Erdas due to the Hellan society being lost. The remaining Hellan people became Sadreans, although their history was mostly gone. Kovo reveals his association with the Hellans in the second series.

In the first Devourer war, Kovo allied with the Devourer and his Conquerors. After the Conquerors lost the war, Tellun the Elk imprisoned Kovo and Gerathon for their crimes. It is also said that one reason why many of the other Great Beasts offered their talismans to the Greencloaks after the war is because they saw the damage that two of their own had done, and wanted to fix it. Kovo is an ardent enemy of the now-deceased Wyrm, and does everything to stop it, not caring of the consequences it may have on others.

Tales of the Great Beasts[]

Kovo appears in the first chapter of the book, convincing King Feliandor to strive to take over Erdas by saying "It seems to me that you are entitled to more. Just a piece of Nilo, just a sliver of Zhong... and why not? Would that not be fair, after all?"

He later killed the Four Fallen before Tellun and Halawir arrived.

Tales of the Fallen Beasts[]

Kovo appears on the fourth chapter of the book, when Takoda, a monk from South Nilo, was hitting the bell for the third time, Kovo had appeared. Near the end of the chapter, it showed Takoda and Kovo escaping the monastery for Zerif was on the hunt for Great Beasts. Conor led them safely back to Greenhaven.

Against the Tide[]

Kovo appears in the first chapter; imprisoned at Muttering Rock. Gerathon visits his prison disguised as a young boy with a buzzard spirit animal. She tells Kovo that the Conquerors almost have enough talismans to free him.

Immortal Guardians[]

Kovo was first seen on the third chapter, in Greenhaven in chains while Takoda sat beside him. Takoda tries to explain to Meilin, Conor, Rollan, and Abeke that he was trying to help them. He proves it by giving Kovo a chalk and a papyrus and he began to draw a door. They found out that the mysterious door was located in the Petral Mountains. Kovo and Takoda go with Conor and Meilin to discover the door but Kovo got them trapped underground. At one time, neither Kovo or Briggan can fit through two tunnels so Takoda had to bring him to passive state. Kovo was reluctant at first but finally entered passive state. Then they meet Xanthe who lived in Sadre and revealed that Kovo was the one who noticed the rot below the Evertree and was trying to save the world.

Relationships[]

Takoda[]

Kovo is Takoda's spirit animal. Although sometimes the ape will not listen to his partner, they are able to use sign language with each other. While underground, Kovo uses the sign "little friend" to refer to Takoda, and Takoda uses "big friend" for Kovo. Kovo was visibly jealous when Takoda was talking and laughing with Xanthe, showing that he does care for Takoda. Kovo also chose the location on Takoda where he would take passive form; the boy's neck.

Trivia[]

  • Kovo's name is pronounced "koh-voh".[2]

  • In Immortal Guardians, he would huff whenever Takoda walked too far ahead, though not because he missed him.
  • Kovo is the only primate Great Beast.
