This article contains plot and/or ending details.

The Nectar of Ninani was a clear liquid resembling water that tasted like the drinker’s favorite food and/or drink. It was said that the Nectar was made by pouring pure water over the the Marble Swan, but in Tale of the Great Beast Ninani, it was seen that the talisman produced flowers containing Nectar after being dropped into the wet soil beside a waterfall.

Before the Second Devourer War, the Nectar was used to make bonding with a spirit animal safe when a human drank it. However, it is unknown what would happen if an animal were to drink it. It was customary for children to be given Nectar by a Greencloak at a Nectar ceremony, an event they would attend after their eleventh birthday. If a child summoned a spirit animal without the Nectar, they would contract bonding sickness.

After the Second Devourer War, the old Evertree was destroyed and the bonding sickness stopped existing as a result. Thus, the Nectar is no longer needed. It is unknown if drinking the Nectar would still summon a spirit animal.

Source[]

The Nectar was produced by Ninani’s talisman, the Marble Swan.

In Tale of the Great Beast Ninani, the Marble Swan was dropped into wet soil and flowering vines sprung from it. The liquid contained by these flowers was confirmed to be the Nectar after Tepin summoned his spirit animal by drinking it. It is unknown if the method the Greencloaks use, bringing water to the talisman rather than the talisman to a water source, would produce a different result, but it was said by Olvan that fresh water was required to create Nectar and it was said by Lenori that the water must be "very pure."

Because the Marble Swan was destroyed during the Second Devourer War, Nectar can no longer be produced. It is unknown if existing Nectar was affected.

Tale of the Great Beast Ninani[]

The Marble Swan was given to Tepin by Ninani sometime after the First Devourer War.

Tepin sought out Ninani after receiving a prophetic dream, and upon finding her, Ninani gave the boy her talisman and showed him how to use it to create Nectar. Through their conversation, it was revealed that Ninani knew there was no cure for bonding sickness and that the Bile was "made from a talisman." As a result, she entrusted Tepin with her talisman so that he could use it to produce Nectar, a substance that prevents the incurable bonding sickness, and distribute it across Erdas.

After hearing this, Tepin agreed to do as she wished. Ninani named him as her the [[The Keeper of Greenhaven|Keeper and he was given a green cloak by Anyati. Although Ninani never explicitly said she wanted the Greencloaks to keep her talisman, she had said she "may need Anyati [the Greencloak]’s help now as well" and did not protest when Tepin was given Anyati’s green cloak, so it’s possible she had wanted the Greencloaks' involvement.

Regardless of how it happened, the talisman was kept by the Greencloaks after Tepin’s passing and they became the Nectar’s sole distributor.

Taste[]

Nectar was consistently seen to taste pleasant, often like the drinker’s favorite food and/or drink. These are the descriptions of it that characters gave.

"The nectar was thick like syrup, and richly sweet, like fruit in honey. The consistency became more liquid once it was in his mouth. He swallowed. It tasted amazing! Better than anything he had ever tried."

Conor in Chapter 1 of Wild Born

"The nectar tasted like unheated soup, the kind her mother used to make with crushed nuts. It was sweeter, but otherwise strikingly similar."

Abeke in Chapter 2 of Wild Born

"There was a restaurant that sometimes gave him sweetened cinnamon toast, his favorite treat. The nectar tasted sort of like that, but liquefied."

Rollan in Chapter 4 of Wild Born

"His mouth instantly filled with the sweet memory of granadilla fruit. It was delicious! He almost laughed from the surprise of it."

–Tepin in Tale of the Great Beast Ninani

Wallace, Conor’s eldest brother, once jokingly said it tasted like sour goat milk. This was described as a memory by Conor.

Garrin, Conor’s other brother, said it tasted like apple cider. This was described as a memory by Conor.

Trivia[]

  • The Nectar cannot cure the bonding sickness, but it lets the drinker avoid the sickness altogether.
  • It was seen many times that not every person has access to the Nectar. Whether this was due to neglect on the Greencloaks part or just low resources, is unknown.
  • When the old Evertree was damaged, the only safe way to bond was with the Nectar.
